This Chart contains 8 traces, 4 for your trust and 4 National for comparison. Each tract is a key performance indicator (KPI) for the National Inpatient Falls Audit.

KPI 1. Multifactorial Assessment to optimise Safe Activity (MASA) quality score
% of cases that had an MASA quality score, will be used from Analysis 2 shared below.
Use analysed data to calculate MASA quality score made up from the sum of:
Analysis 1
3.1 Vision assessment (analysis 1) = Yes = 1
3.2 LSBP assessment (analysis 1) = Yes = 1
3.3 Medication review = yes = 1
3.4 Delirium assessment (analysis 1) = yes = 1
3.5 Mobility assessment (analysis 1) = yes = 1
3.6 Continence assessment (analysis 1) = yes = 1
Total possible score = 6

Analysis 2
Use data from analysis 1 (MASA quality)
Calculate number of cases with MASA quality score ≥5
Numerator: total cases with MASA quality score ≥5 / denominator: total cases.

Context of what the MASA quality score is - This is a score calculated from adding together the six risk factor assessments for each patient. A maximum score of 6 indicates all assessment components were completed for that patient.
A high-quality MASA is defined as a score of 5 or more out of 6. Falls are multi-factorial hence, MASA needs to include a range of components to be considered high quality.

Post-fall management

KPI 2. Checked for signs of injury before movement from the floor
Patients whose notes show they were checked for signs or symptoms of potential for spinal injury and fracture.
4.1 Is there documented evidence in the clinical notes that the patient was checked for signs or symptoms of potential for spinal injury and fracture before they were moved?
'Yes - injury suspected' or 'Yes - no injury suspected'. Note: If the data is missing for 4.1 the record is excluded from analysis.

KPI 3. Used a safe manual handling method to move patient from the floor
Patients who were moved from the floor using a safe handling method.
4.2 What moving and handling method was used to move the patient following the fall that caused the injury(ies)?
All methods other than 'Got up independently' or 'Method not documented'. Note: If the data is missing for 4.2 the record is excluded from analysis.

KPI 4. Medical assessment within 30 minutes of a fall
Patients that received an assessment within 30 minutes of fall
4.3 Is there documented evidence that the patient had a medical assessment within 30 minutes following fall that resulted in the injury (ies)?
is either 'Assessment by medically qualified professional within 30 minutes' or 'Assessment by other healthcare professional within 30 minutes'.
Note: If the data is missing for 4.3 the record is excluded from analysis.

Data Selection
Each data point is a quarter year. ending two complete months previous to current month. This is to allow time for the NHFD record and subsequent NAIF record to be entered.
Metrics apply for all records entered during the analysis period.

Update Frequency
Charts data is recalculated every 24 hours.
